Kournikova played well in that match but 1999 was the year when she officially lost her aura. As so often became the case for the rest of her short career, she could play well for a set or even get close to winning, but for some reason with the finishing line in sight she seemed to slow down and let others past, so to speak. I'm not even sure it was nerves, there was just a mental block. In 2000 she played a lot of tournaments, won a lot of matches, reached many quarters and semis, but just couldn't go that little bit further. By the end of the year Clijsters, Henin and Dokic were starting to emerge as well, and suddenly Anna was competing against younger players. 2001 was the year when too many matches chasing ranking points in 2000 caught up on her and she never really recovered her consistency after that. That said, there were a few promising tournaments in 2002, but again, against top players snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. By 2003 mentally and physically she seemed to be finished.

Graf knee the Hingis Williams Kournikova gen was a new breed. More aggressive, more talented and more competitive than the pushers like Martinez Fernandez and Sanchez she defeated all decade. And yet more mentally tough than Novotna Davenport Sabatini and Rubin who should have challenged her more. She retired at the right time as winning against the new gen would only have gotten harder in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

Alex SDB "No. Monica was great but even without the tragedy, she was not going to reach the level of Graf, Navratilova, Court or maybe even Evert" I stopped reading that comment right there. It's obvious you're biased and full of prejudice and I don't like communicating with people like that. Saying that "she was not going to reach that level" even though she's had won 8 (EIGHT) GS titles by the age of 19, obviously proves your subjective judgment. And that was only just 4 months before she was going to get stabbed in the back with a 23 cm long knife. Also, in that moment of her AO 1993 win, Graff who is 4 years older and who LOST that AO final to Seles, only had 3 GS titles more. Seles was even 3-3 in H2H vs Graf in GS matches by that moment, even though she was out of her prime while Graff was deeply in it for most of those 6 matches. So saying what you said is much worse than claiming Nadal is not going to reach Federer's GS titles - yeah, it's so obvious he is not gonna do that. Feel free to answer to yourself if you like, I'm done with you and I certainly won't be reading your answer because there is no argument to have on this subject. Notifications off.

No. Monica was great but even without the tragedy, she was not going to reach the level of Graf, Navratilova, Court or maybe even Evert. She didn't have a wide array of content naturally in her game as Graf for example. And her lack of fitness and not doing anything besides tennis (matches) was going to hurt her. In fact, by 92/93, the tour not only adapted to Seles' game already (a normal thing for top players and phenoms to experience), but they would have surpassed Seles or at least reach her level by late 93 or by 94. Seles not doing anything else besides tennis matches would also put her at risk of injury, so even without the tragedy, some have said Seles may have become injured and in-and-out of the game.

People forget that Kournikova never really had the opportunity to fully reach her potential as she was forced to retire due to injury when she was only 22 or 23 I believe. Think about that. That's younger than Genie Bouchard is now.

  • ilovetati91

    Πριν χρόνο

Lol that's so incorrect. She missed almost ALL of 2001 due to an injury and that was following a career-best year spent mostly in the top ten. No potential was maxed out...she just couldn't get over the persistent injury struggles. 2002 was only a comeback year, mediocre in slams but did well in a few Tier Is, and she was retired by spring 2003.

  • deacon conway

She was already on decline at the end of her career from 2001-2003. Her potential (whatever that was) was already maxed out, minus the failure to win a singles tournament, which she should have atleast managed somewhere.

It's crazy how fast Graf was even at the end of her career. Clearly much faster than Anna here. Anna was such an under achiever, a real pity given her talent. I wish she had the kind of drive that Sharapova has.

@Kevin Nguyen Exactly. Many people overlook this aspect (which is sad they cannot see it or grasp it) but the grunting-noise making actually makes the player less of a true professional tennis player. Tennis is a culture and that includes poise, or grace under fire or pressure. To be on court and play with abandon while still mainting poise and making it look fluid and easy, while having great conduct on and off the court, is a true tennis professional.

Graf was naturally gifted with speed and quick feet and reflexes, but it's also that her game was smart. Sure, it's a game totally her style and made for her and not for everyone else, but Graf also knew how to play smartly to get the job done. Federer is the example of this era, and is another player who demonstrates this.
